Capoeira ResistÊncia
an organization to help spread capoeira awareness
in the Charlottesville community
Mission Statement
Capoeira Charlottesville is founded on the principle that human beings reach their full potential as individuals and members of the local and world communities when they ask it of themselves to do so, and when they in turn encourage their peers to follow suit.
We believe that the values of capoeira to practice mutual respect, playfulness, control of body and mind are the very values that enable its practitioners to exceed their goals in all areas of their lives. Through sharing the practice and philosophy of capoeira, we will engage not only the body, but the intuition, initiative, and focus, empowering each individual to reach into his own self and his own community with ambition and purpose.
What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is approximately 400 years old. It came to Brazil by way of the slave trade in the 16th century, in which various cultures were forced together, forming many Afro-Brazilian folkloric arts and traditions. One of these traditions was Capoeira. Briefly, it is an Afro-Brazilian martial-art incorporating fight, dance, play, music, and philosophy into rigorous training. It is a unique and uplifting cultural experience that brings together beauty, music, and power. Capoeira develops mental and physical balance, conditioning, as well as teaching confidence and self-defense.
